Pause For Thought – Find and Embrace Your Joy

I am surrounded by joy at the moment, the word not the emotion, but that follows as you’ll read below.

First of all, a Facebook friend asked us to share a positive word, using the the initial of our first name.  My immediate thought was ugh what positive word starts with J (duh!).  In fact I think I saw her post three times before Joy popped into my mind!  I’m a bit slow like that sometimes, or more positively I just needed to make space for my intuition to give me a nudge, how’s that?

Next, another friend in her weekly newsletter asked her readers did they want to join a Facebook group, called I Love My Life, devoted to seeking out and embracing our joy as she felt (as do I and others) there was, during 2016, far too much focus on negative news stories. She was also inspired by Robbie Williams’ latest release ‘I Love My Life’.
Before Christmas 2016, she asked of her Facebook friends what hobbies they would like to start or re-start in 2017 and why, one enlightened soul suggested “because it reconnects us to parts of ourselves which were solely for enjoyment.” With such nudges how could she resist? And indeed how can I?  So the group has been born and I will report back on progress.

The last nudge was from Mike Dooley whose daily Notes From The Universe I subscribe to. At the bottom of the latest note there was an invitation to the Love Your Life 30 Day Project. You get an email each day for 30 days with an activity for each day to help you create a fantastic 2017. Again I’ll report back on progress as I already have a fantastic 2017 planned, with massive life changes, that I will share with you in due course, as we are still in the getting our shit sorted phase before we can actually start it, so although my word for 2017 is ADVENTURE for the first 2-3 months it needs to be Patience! That could be interesting!

So to the emotion of Joy.  In September 2015 we started house and pet sitting for people and our very first house sit was to look after a delightful Jack Russell called Elsie who is an absolute Joy to sit for and has absolutely stolen our hearts.  As a result we have looked after her 12 more times, at the time of writing and we are due to look after her again this weekend.  Even though the draw of Elsie is strong, I felt that our weekend could be better spent sorting out the aforementioned shit so as to move our plans forward. So I wasn’t feeling the love you might say. Then in a bolt out of the blue I suddenly recognised how much Joy I have to look forward to this weekend:

  • A road trip
  • Quality time with my husband
  • Elsie (sic)
  • Walks in lovely countryside
  • A lovely country pub (mid walk)
  • Guinness and cosy chats in said pub, whilst Elsie soaks up the admiration of all and sundry!
  • Fish and Chips – from one of the best chippys I have ever been to
  • Liza Tarbuck on Radio 2
  • Time to read, plan and contemplate

Wonderful, and that’s just for starters!

So, the lesson for me there is that there is plenty of joy to be found, if you only flipping look for it!

Pause For Thought – How Are You Shining Your Light?

For most of 2016 it’s felt like there is turmoil both in the world and also in my personal life.

It’s hard to know whether this is an illusion that just seems in sharper focus this year.

A lot of well loved musicians, actors and TV personalities have made their transition to non-physical. Both my husband’s sister and my father also made their transitions. My mother-in-law has been frail ever since and what currently seems to be an unmendable rift has occurred in my family.

I embrace the change. I cannot control it. Control is an illusion.

Politically we’ve had the shock of Brexit and recently the US elections. Although I was not in favour of either result I like the fact that it is shaking up the status quo and making people think. Thinking is good. Thought leads to change.

I embrace the change.

I feel there is an opportunity here, showing it’s first glimmer, it’s first sun rise.

We are all connected, we’re not separate, not spiritually anyway. What I do and you do sends out a ripple into the worldwide pond.

What if you could be the light at the end of the tunnel showing the way?

You may not be able to affect world change but you can choose to make small changes, you can take small steps:

  • Smile
  • Stop complaining and criticizing about people and stuff
  • Love yourself – don’t be mean to yourself and self critical
  • Practice gratitude
  • Be happy
  • Laugh
  • Have fun

It just takes thought and practice, any change takes practice.

Pause For Thought – The Sweetness Of Doing Nothing

Say what?  As someone who likes to fill her day with ‘stuff’ doing nothing is quite a concept.
When I’m busy I almost long for nothing to do, well not quite, I long for time to do all the things I want to do but can’t because I’m too busy.  Then, guess what?  I find myself without so much to do and I’ve been sitting around doing a bit of navel gazing – journalling, working with angel cards, meditating – doing, doing, doing, but not the things I planned to do when I had more time!  I know, I know…

I even went to the library!

The thing with spending lots of time at home, dear reader, is that you don’t see people or get out in the fresh air much.  I had a wonderful 20 minute walk each way in the autumnal sunshine and spent a very pleasant couple of hours in the warmth of the library indulging in one of my passions, reading.  This also enabled me to tick off one of the things on my to do list.  I’ve been wanting to read this book for a while as inspiration and information gathering for a book I’m writing.  I could never seem to get round to reading it at home though.  So I am flushed with achievement and even came back and spent a good hour doing some writing on my book.  Bloody hell!
So, the library was a success and is something I definitely plan to do more of.

As part of the doing, doing, doing, I actually got around to reading Anita Moorjani’s second book, What If This Is Heaven?  This book has languished for some time in the black hole formerly known as Jakki’s Kindle. I am so glad I finally got around to reading it.  In fact I enjoyed it so much I read it almost in one sitting, something I rarely do.  If you have any interest at all in where we come from and where we go when we die (or go back to the non physical realm) then Anita’s account of her Near Death Experience (NDE)in her first book Dying To Be Me and what she learnt from that experience in this book, then it might well be right up your street.  I loved it.

I’ll do a full review in the future but for now there was one thing that really struck a chord, or led me to a truth:  The question asked of me was “Am I constantly obsessed with working on myself, trying to improve myself in some way?”  Er, well yes, but I actually hadn’t realised it, until now and I will still considering what else I might do instead, when the following happened…

On Thursday I found myself wishing that I could meet up with one of my best friends for a good old chinwag, a laugh and a chance to talk a bit woo woo.   We talk every Friday morning, usually, and we meet for lunch every couple of months.  But with Winter drawing in I don’t care much for travelling far so our next lunch probably won’t be until January or February.
Then in a delightful synchronicity, on Friday I got a text from her saying that she was in town on business and did I fancy meeting for coffee?  Did I?  Oh yes please.  Because we are so in tune with each other we often find that we have the same issues cropping up.  She correctly deduced that I was actually a bit bored.  Except I hadn’t recognised it as such.  She is too.  Perfect.  After a lot of fun, laughter and discussion plus later reflection, at home, I realised that I need to spend some time just doing nothing.  I’m not talking about structured meditation, although I feel it will be a form of meditation, I’m talking about just sitting, not reading, not journalling, not planning, nada, nothing.  So I laid on the settee, put on some background music and did nothing for at least an hour.  I can report back that it was fabulous. So more of that too on the agenda.

And do you know what? I managed to tick two things off my to do list.  Ha!

The sweetness of doing nothing.  Dolce Far Niente.  Give It a Try.
